The Coffee Tree as the Tree of Wisdom

The Biblical fruit of the Tree of Wisdom or the Tree of the Knowledge of good and evil is actually the Coffee bean based on description, history, location and chemistry. This is my take on it.

A few decades ago (while working in Saudi Arabia) In one of my long discussions and querulous debates online regarding the true location of the Biblical Eden, I came across the so-called pseudopigraphic Book of Enoch which is not included in mainstream Christian and Jewish canons but accepted in such minor sects in the Ethiopian and Eritrean Christian Churches and historically with extant Jewish minor groupings.

The Book of Enoch is interesting since it describes in detail ancient sky observations hence its attribution in general as the Book of the Watchers or of God’s heavenly angels. The Book of the Watchers is precisely the first chapter in the Book of Enoch.

The astronomy itself (note: not Astrology) is perhaps the main reason for its rejection by various Church authorities as most of them subscribe to fixed geocentric views of the universe that time rather than some deviations from those already pointed out by the Book.

As for the physical location of Paradise or Eden, Enoch describes it as further East. Although it follows also another of my argument that Genesis also contain. Suggestions in which Eden or Paradise is actually an allegory for the Female Body or Sex Organ. While the Tree of Life is that of the male penis.

Genesis 2:8-10. The LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and placed there the man whom he had formed. Out of the ground the LORD God made grow every tree that was delightful to look at and good for food, with the tree of life in the middle of the garden and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. A river rises in Eden^* to water the garden; beyond there it divides and becomes four branches.
Genesis 2:16-17, God told Adam, “You are free to eat from any of the trees of the garden [evidently including the tree of life] except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. From that tree you shall not eat; when you eat from it you shall die” — that is, become subject to death.

In most interpretations the Tree of Life is separate from the Tree of Wisdom while there are minor ones in which it says they are one and the same. In fact, sometimes mainstream church priests and preachers fall into that lumping when they say that the tree of life is actually the tree of death. In which a person either die literally from partaking its fruits or they don’t actually die but got awakened or “acquired wisdom” and/or “realized their nakedness”.

Other consequences are that humanity acquired the “original sin” which can be redeemed only through baptism and/or following Christ.

Some other people and/or preachers who dealt with the same subject say that by eating the fruit we actually lived forever as mortals by regenerating through sex and no longer immortals like God and his angels per se.

Going back to the Tree of Wisdom. Various speculations put several fruit trees as to which was it. Fig tree, Banyan, Palm tree, Pomegranate, some type of berries, Banana, the Coconut and of course the classic western Apple. Others say it is not any of our current line of fruit crops.

The Book of Enoch actually has a detailed description of it in Enoch 32:3

That tree is in height like the fir, and its leaves, like (those of) the carob, and its fruit like clusters of the vine—very cheerful, and its fragrance penetrates far beyond the tree.

Coffee also emits jasmin-like fragrance when its flowering.

Historically coffee was not yet a very popular beverage during the time of the Book of Enoch (around 200 to 300 BC). It was strangely a mystery at that time. Maybe its only for godly and angelic people or those who lives in Paradise.

But around 600 to 800 of the present Christian Era things seems to change and historians actually allude coffee as originated or originating from either Yemen in the Arabian Peninsula or Ethiopia in Africa. Both plausible locations of the Biblical Eden or facing a direct location towards it (i.e. probably again India and/or Indonesia?).

And of course, we all know the stimulating effect of caffeine as the primary benefit of its chemical properties.

It is also perhaps the most probable reason that our supposed ancestors Adam and Eve got “AWAKENED” and realized their nakedness!!

And that did not sit well with their imperious rulers that time (God and his Angels) and therefore they need to die or at the least be driven out of Paradise. 🙂
